"Encourage people, even when you are losing” Capriece, 10

Solidarity Sports ran a two week sports club at St Cuthbert's School during the Easter holidays. This project took place because parents approached Solidarity Sports and were concerned about the lack of affordable sports provision in the area. During school holidays, their children were spending long hours at home playing computer games as there was little alternative available in the community. The parents thought it was crucial for their children to have the opportunity to participate in more sports activities.

The focus of the project was sport and healthy eating. Through activities such as football, cricket and basketball, children were given the opportunity to make friends, have fun and keep fit. A healthy prawn and avocado salad was a very popular meal which the children learnt to make. One of the mothers, Muaza, explained the impact that the project had on her children "It's a good idea for the kids to get out and play about, it makes them more confident when meeting other kids".

A local filmmaker was invited to film the project and create a DVD which all the families could keep as a memory of the project. We held a screening for all the people involved in the project and the public to attend at Kensington Central Library. At the end of the film, the children stood up on stage and took questions from the audience. The film documents the children’s experiences and their thoughts on sport, teamwork and the importance of healthy eating.
