Donate Sports Equipment

In Cuba, sport and physical education begin when a child is only 45 days old. Parents are taught to exercise their children's limbs and massage their muscles to keep them healthy. It’s not just children that are encouraged to take part in sport and physical activity. Older people are offered the support of professional trainers who run stretching classes, like tai chi, in public parks. Baseball and boxing are the two most popular sports in Cuba, although volleyball, chess and football are also popular.

Solidarity Sports is organising a donation of sports equipment to Cuba. The concept for sport in Cuba is ‘Sport for all’; the right of the people, and everyone can take part in sport free of charge. However, due to the difficult economic conditions on the island, sports resources are hard to come by. Gyms are often stocked with very old equipment and children are forced to play baseball with improvised pieces of wood as bats
.

This has not stopped Cuba gaining remarkable achievements at world level. Boxers Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon were both treble-gold medallists at the Olympics and dominated amateur boxing for decades. Cuban athlete Javier Sotomayor is widely regarded as the greatest high jumper of all time. His jump of 2.45 metres in 1993 is the longest standing record in the history of men’s high jump and still stands today.
